Who/What is M-Pesa?

M-Pesa is a mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service, launched in 2007 by Vodafone for Safaricom and Vodacom, the largest mobile network operators in Kenya and Tanzania.

It has since expanded to Afghanistan, South Africa, India, and in Eastern Europe. M-Pesa allows users to deposit, withdraw, and transfer money easily with a mobile device, as well as purchase goods and services and pay bills.

The service allows users without access to a bank account to participate in the formal financial sector and has been successful in increasing financial inclusion in the countries where it has been introduced.

How long do transfers take to clear?

Do I need to register separately to use M-Pesa?
